Not wanting to waste any more time, I’ve already worked up the files needed to self-publish on CreateSpace and to publish on the Amazon Kindle store. Are there any other digital formats that I should bother working up?
Also, do you think it would be useful to work up some kind of pre-order thing for folks that want signed copies?
I’m not familiar enough with CreateSpace to know what that’s about — but it’s where you’d order the books, right? The paperbacks? That’s cool.
I know that I, for one, can’t really afford a Kindle, so having the book only be available for Kindle or as a tree would limit my ability to read it. I think you might want to consider another e-format like PDF, but you’d have to make sure it’s copy/paste protected. I think Adobe Acrobat will do that, but I’m not sure.
What does the Sony eReader use? Do you know? I’m just thinking that the Kindle being so cost-prohibitive has people checking out alternatives, and you might have some audience with another format, but PDF is pretty universal.
And congrats again on finishing. Nice work, and just in time for the Christmas gift-giving thing. 
About CreateSpace – I’ve been working on an article that I should finish up today or tomorrow about it. Stay tuned.
The thing with the Kindle is that it is very easy to get the book uploaded into the Kindle Store, where everybody who can afford a kindle is shopping.
The Sony eReader does have a central store, but no current tools for publishers to upload/list/sell their own books. I could probably make a file for the eReader, but then I’d only be able to sell it here on my site. They do have plans to open up submissions, though, and I’m now on their contact list for when that get here.
Acrobat does that security stuff. In fact, you can set those settings when you export a pdf from OpenOffice.org.
Thanks for the thoughts. I’m going to look into the various other ebook readers now.
I think you should do some sort of pre-order. I know I would like to get a signed copy for my collection of books so hopefully we can work something out!
