Classic Pulp #3: The Defenders

3892

This one is by Philip K. Dick, who is everybody’s favorite science fiction author that they’ve never heard of. He wasn’t overly successful when he was alive, but Hollywood has made movies out of his novels like crazy.

Off the top of my head, the following movies are based on his work.

  • Blade Runner
  • Total Recall
  • Minority Report
  • Paycheck
  • A Scanner Darkly
  • The Adjustment Bureau

Anyway, here’s one of his works that has slipped into the public domain. Its about a world where war has been going on so long and has been so destructive, that all humans have had to move underground, while robots have to do the fighting in the radioactive wasteland above. Of course, things aren’t always what they seem. Perhaps it was written a little later than most of the pulps I’ll feature around here, but I you should forgive me.

It’s available for free at feedbooks.com in all those popular ebook formats.

Ha, I had to look up Logan’s Run, to see if he wrote that one too, but he didn’t. :)
