What happens is that I open up the chapter I'm working on and start reading it at the beginning. Half an hour and a dozen changes later I actually start writing new material. I need to edit, to be be sure, but I also want to feel like I'm making real progress.

And being a fairly short book, I'm actually working from an outline and list of scenes.

I hear a lot of garbage about quieting the inner editor too. If I did that I'd have self-published my first real novel with a vanity publishing company and lost my butt to the tune of $1500. My wife, thank goodness, talked me out of doing it.

I also would have already published Ghost Hunters, which would have besmirched my writerly reputation (yeah, right) and sullied the sequels forever. We need our inner editor.

Maybe you can postpone yours. I'm not sure what you mean when you say it takes you half an hour to get to the writing, and I'm less sure what that has to do with editing, but I can tell you this: Your "inner editor" will be a LOT quieter if you plot/plan things and then do a scene-level outline. Mine certainly is.

Now, if I had the skills to be a writer, I'd be all set. :)

You'll do great. Just stick to your plan/outline and go.
